It’s all about Togetherhood! Over a Ton of Food Raised!

The headline is not a figure of speech. The Hernando County YMCA did raise over a ton of food for the Togetherhood Food Drive Olympics! The YMCA of the Suncoast ran the Olympics Wellness Challenge across all the branches from July 26 to August 11. Thanks to the community coming together 2,140 lbs., were collected and donated to People Helping People, a local nonprofit helping alleviate hunger.

“Organized by the Hernando Y's Togetherhood program, the Food Drive Olympics was a chance for our partners, members and staff to work together to provide non-perishable food items to Hernando County residents. Each week was dedicated to a specific team(s). The Challenge was to collect the most food (measured in pounds) during your team's designated week with a total drive collection goal of one ton (2,000 pounds). This competition produced great results with 2,140 lbs., collected!” shared Ann-Gayl Ellis, Membership Director at the Hernando County YMCA, who helped oversee the competition.

“People Helping People is a non-profit with a mission to alleviate hunger in Hernando County by breaking the cycle of poverty. Besides providing food, People Helping People links individuals to benefits, education, training and resources empowering them to help themselves to become productive members of Hernando County,” she added.

The highlight of the Challenge was the enthusiastic engagement by Hernando Y’s community partners, These included Simpson Technical, Pasco Hernando State College, Frederick Kelly Elks Lodge, Rehability Prosthetics & Orthotics, and Mid Florida Bank.

“We had a robust response to this food drive, which was so heartwarming. Plus, this was a timely effort as local children were home for the summer without access to breakfast and lunch opportunities available in schools. Togetherhood plans to host another food drive in the spring.”
