The Y is about one thing... discovery. Kids enrolled in our tennis classes or tennis camps have the opportunity to explore their environment, find new talents, try new activities, gain independence, and make lasting friendships.
Our tennis training programs are designed to help you grow with the basic, intermediate and advanced skills of tennis. Participants will be broken up into skill levels starting with the beginner's level. Lessons will focus on serving, rallies, scoring and playing points.
Join our USTA & USPTA professionals for quality skill instruction. These lessons are ongoing monthly at our North Pinellas YMCA in Palm Harbor. Our Tennis Center includes four hard courts and two clay courts.
Skill level determines whether instruction time is during the week or on the weekend.
The Y also has Cardio Tennis and unique group activity featuring drills to give players of all abilities the ultimate high-energy workout. Cardio tennis consists of warm-up, cardio workout, and cool down phases. This is a fitness program focused more on getting people moving and less on improving specific tennis skills.
Below are descriptions of play for children, beginners and levels 1 through 5 based on USTA rules.
LEVEL 5- May be successful USTA Sectional 12 and under players. Should start playing adults. Very steady when focused. As adults, will play USTA league tennis for years.
LEVEL 4- Starts to use maneuvering tactics, usually with crosscourt shots. May play USTA tournaments.
LEVEL 3- Serves reliably. Rallies are deeper in the court. Tends to play long neutral rallies. Plays standard 6 game sets. Use 10 point tie breaker for 3rd set.
LEVEL 2- Rallies can last up to 10 shots. Recovers behind the baseline. Plays 4 games sets. Uses standard ball.
LEVEL 1- Can serve and return from full court. Plays 4 games sets, with QS green ball or standard ball. Hits most shots to center of court. Short points, short strokes, short shots. Often plays from "no man's land".
