FLOAT - Infant and Toddler Survival Swim Program
The YMCA's FLOAT program is a 1-to-1 Infant & Toddler swim safety program. Float teaches children how to roll on their backs, breathe and float to the side of the pool until help arrives. Those precious seconds can save a life!
FLOAT Sessions include eight, 10-15 minute, private lessons with a certified FLOAT instructor. Sessions are "mini" lessons that maximize the short attention span of infants and toddlers while gradually increasing comfort level in the water through personalized instruction.
The FLOAT program is intended for infants & toddlers ages 1 to 4 years and is available to members and non-members of our YMCAs.
To find out more or to register your child for the FLOAT program, reach out to the Aquatics Director at your local branch.
Parent FAQ
Absolutely! Parents are welcome to watch their child progress. If your child is distracted by you, we kindly ask them to move to an area where they cannot see you.
Please do not feed your child or give them milk or juice one to three hours before their swim lesson. Children often swallow lots of air and water which may cause a child to throw up... this is normal.
Students should wear a comfortable swimming suit and must wear an appropriate swim diaper if your child is not fully potty trained. Swim shirts are optional. We do not have towels available.
Make-up lessons are available only for weather or a medical issue. Please contact your Float instructor to coordinate scheduling.
Every child learns at a different rate. This is why our program is a skill-learned program, not a "pass/fail" program. Your child's personal progress will be taken into account in each class. At the end of each session, your instructor may recommend continued training. Our advice is to be patient with your child and offer lots of praise and encouragement. It is always best to practice water safety at home too.
Floating, like many activities, may generate anxiety in some children. This is usually the case during the first four lessons. As the child progresses, they will be more comfortable in the water. This is why we encourage scheduling two lessons per week. Remember that learning to float is a lifesaving skill that your child is learning.
