Citrus Y seniors look forward to Summer R.I.S.E. every year
Resources - Information - Support – Entry – the Summer RISE program started by the Citrus Memorial Health Foundation YMCA is that and much more as it continues to grow. A community effort, the initiative assists Citrus County high schoolers about to start their senior year with college prep, interview skills and more.
During the two-day free program this July, students engaged in breakout sessions dedicated to covering specific topics like college essay writing, completing scholarship applications, university programs and degrees, how to prepare for an interview and filling out financial aid applications as well as mock interviews with approximately 48 community volunteers.
Launched in the summer of 2018 with only eight students, this year 150 students participated in the program, up from 100 last year.
“This is an amazing program thanks to community partners such as the Education Foundation, The Citrus County School District, Walmart, Citrus County Chronicle, Withlacoochee Technical College, Citrus County Coalition for College and Careers, Publix and more. Recently, we welcomed the College of Central Florida (CF) as our newest partner and program venue,” shares David Reed, Executive Director, Citrus YMCA.
“When we first started this program, we held it at the YMCA. Within three years, we outgrew the Y and needed another location. We were delighted to have CF as a new partner. It’s a great venue with ample space, and their staff assists students with applying for financial aid. Students who participate in R.I.S.E., also have their application fees waived when they apply to CF,” adds Reed.
