Morgan teaches young swimmers.
Water is everywhere, from oceans to lakes and inlets to swimming pools; 71 percent of the Earth's surface is covered in it! While water can be an irresistible place for kids to explore, play and enjoy splashy fun, it can also be risky for those who have yet to develop their water smarts.
Each March, the YMCA of the Suncoast and our seven branches proudly celebrate Safety Around Water. Safety Around Water takes place during the week of spring break. Our certified instructors teach children a sequence of skills to establish confidence in and around water and, ultimately, reduce the risk of drowning.
Morgan Baldino, Aquatics Coordinator, has been teaching swim lessons at the Greater Ridgecrest YMCA for six years. She loves the water and is proud to equip the next generation with the necessary skills to navigate different aquatic environments.
Morgan says, "Enrolling your child in swim lessons could be the difference that saves their life one day." She adds, "Our Safety Around Water lessons allow children to learn proper techniques for staying afloat, treading water and reaching safety."
Studies show that formal swim lessons can reduce the risk of drowning by 88 percent, making this course a crucial resource for families and opening a world of possibilities for all!
Last year, 6,218 children learned to swim and be safe in and around the water throughout the YMCA of the Suncoast. This is especially important considering more children under the age of four drown in Florida than anywhere else in the nation. The Y is committed to doing what it takes to ensure not one more child drowns in Tampa Bay.
Together, we can promote drowning prevention through education and action. Join us as we work to ensure children in our community are water-smart from the start.
