The YMCA of the Suncoast’s Hernando County YMCA started delivering ‘goody bags’ to our SilverSneakers® members as a way to say we’re still here for them.

Seniors received donated items like pens, notepads, cold compresses, a coupon for a free glucose machine, free chicken sandwich, snacks and more all in a reusable bag. Community sponsors include Centene/Staywell, Chick-Fil-A, Bayfront Health, Terlep Chiropractic, 4 Corners Pharmacy and Hernando County Community Coalition.

“We have identified about 100 seniors that haven't been back to the Y, so our guess is that they really haven't ventured out much anywhere. We want to help reduce a little bit of the social isolation that they must be feeling, especially if they aren't tech savvy to get connected to any of the virtual classes,” says Amber Slusser, Executive Director, YMCA of the Suncoast – Hernando County.

YMCA staff and volunteers started delivering the bags the week of August 31st, some via contactless delivery.

"Overall members have been pleasantly surprised. They are shocked at first as to why the Y is at their home but when I shared what we were doing, they were more than tickled," Amber says. "They were so appreciative and the inquisitive looks turned to big smiles.”
