The Stick Club is growing in popularity at the John Geigle YMCA.
The technical name is Modern Arnis, a Filipino martial art. Introduced at the John Geigle YMCA recently, the group practicing it calls itself the Stick Club. Taught by Cameron Byrd, a martial arts enthusiast, a veteran and #1 Amazon Bestselling Author, the group meets on Saturday mornings from 8:30 am to 9:30 am.
Geigle’s Teen Leaders enjoyed the first session, and interest has grown as participants come in to try their hand at it.
“Students don’t need anything but themselves. There is no set uniform and sticks are provided. We have ranking opportunities within the Arnis International organization. We’ve also been bringing in frequent guest instructors so students can see the art from different points of view,” explains Byrd.
The club is limited to people aged 14 and up, but Cameron says younger students may be accepted on a case-by-case basis.
“Modern Arnis is great for self-defense, body coordination and can be done by almost anyone. But my favorite part has always been the family environment you find in the Filipino martial arts community.”
As for the Stick Club, he encourages everyone to see what it’s all about.
“We are growing and getting interest from people of all ages and backgrounds. If you’re even remotely interested, stop in and give it a try. I started training in my teens and those experiences shaped the rest of my life. Learn skills you can take with you wherever you go. You’ll never regret learning a martial art and you will be surprised at the many ways it grows a person,” adds Cameron.
