Hygiene Drive at the Y

As summer comes to a close and back-to-school season approaches - children have a lot on their minds. Will my classes be too hard? Will I have friends in my class? What will my teacher be like?

Children should not have to worry whether they have essential hygiene products to prepare them for the day. That's why our YMCA—specifically our James P. Gills YMCA—is again gearing up to support local students through their annual Back to School Hygiene Supply Drive.

This initiative aims to provide essential hygiene products for kids 5 to 18 years old, ensuring that every child starts the school year feeling prepared and confident.

Executive Director, Michael Whitten shares, “You always think of ‘back to school drives’ being about pencils, paper, glue, etc. There’s no denying that the supplies gathered are paramount to the academic success of students, but what about those whose budgets don’t allow for what most consider the basics? And that’s where we come in. I think that’s one of the best things about being a part of our Y; when a need is there, we are there to help with the amazing support of our members and community partners who continue to rally around this initiative.”

Hygiene products can be a significant strain for many families. The YMCA recognizes this challenge and steps in to alleviate some of the financial burdens by collecting the following items:

  • Soap
  • Deodorant
  • Toothbrush & Toothpaste
  • Comb
  • Brush
  • Feminine products
  • Shampoo

While supplies collected directly address the immediate need for essential products, the impact extends beyond a bar of soap and toothpaste. The YMCA helps children maintain their dignity and self-esteem by removing barriers affecting access to hygiene products. Feeling clean and cared for is essential for a child's confidence, which can positively influence their academic performance and overall well-being.

As we look ahead to another school year, the YMCA's Hygiene Supply Drive reminds us of the impact that small acts of kindness and generosity can have on a community. By supporting initiatives like this, you can contribute to creating a more equitable and supportive environment for all children! All donated hygiene products can be dropped off at the James P. Gills Family YMCA by August 15th.
