Julio Vega is a Suncoast YMCA icon. After 25 years with us, as of November 15, he has moved on to the YMCA of the USA as their Director of Strategic Intervention. District Vice President for the James P. Gills Y since 2012, Julio joined the YMCA of the Suncoast in 1998 and has served in many positions.
A well-known Suncoast Y and community leader, from Clearwater to Hudson, Julio ensured the success of many branches and programs. Starting and sustaining youth programs, securing and retaining volunteers, cultivating donors for fundraising initiatives and mentoring staff, he did it all and more.
Since 2009, Julio has volunteered for the Y-USA Hispanic Leadership Network Steering Committee, contributing at the national level. Additionally, he devoted his time volunteering at the state level, collaborating with the Florida Alliance YMCA Employee Resources Group to further support and engage with the local Y community. And not that he wasn’t busy enough, this May he also completed his Bachelor of Science in Human Services from Springfield College, graduating summa cum laude.
Scott Goyer, President & CEO, Suncoast Y notes, “We are so grateful for the time Julio has spent serving the YMCA of the Suncoast communities. He is a consummate professional with a heart for the community. Every YMCA he has led has exceeded expectations. He will be missed by his staff, by volunteers and by the senior leadership of our YMCA. We are so excited for Julio‘s next YMCA adventure and look forward to continuing to see how he will make an impact in many communities throughout our country. Thank you, Julio.”
“As I reflect on what I'll miss the most, it undeniably boils down to the people. Throughout the past 25 years, I've forged meaningful connections with members, volunteers, donors and staff,” shares Julio.
“Every interaction, whether with individuals contributing their time, financial support or the dedicated team I've worked alongside, holds significant value to me. However, the primary aspect I'll miss profoundly is witnessing the tangible impact we've been able to make on those we serve. The ability to see firsthand the positive changes and transformations in the lives of others has been an incredibly fulfilling and rewarding aspect of my journey.”
As for his new position, he says:
“The upcoming opportunity will broaden my understanding of YMCA accountability. It presents a chance for me to gain valuable experience in assisting YMCAs nationwide in enhancing their stability and ensuring compliance with membership qualifications.”
“I am immensely grateful to the Suncoast YMCA and would like to express a heartfelt THANK YOU! My love for my job, the incredible people I worked with and those I served is immeasurable. I want to emphasize that no future position can replace the invaluable experiences and support I received from the leadership, peers and my dedicated staff team. To all of you, you will be sincerely missed!”
Congratulations Julio! We will miss you too.
