It’s June, that month when school ends and summer begins, and the time of year when we pause to celebrate dads and show our appreciation for all they do. Interestingly enough, the first Father’s Day celebration kicked off more than 100 years ago at a YMCA in Spokane, Wash., so the YMCA has a long history of honoring dads. In that great tradition, YMCA of the Suncoast would like to offer a few fun ways to honor dad by giving him the gift of health. That way, he’ll have enough energy to continue coaching baseball, riding roller coasters and giving the best bear hugs on the planet—all day, every day.

George Garcia, executive director of YMCA of the Suncoast's High Point branch, is one of ten national recipients of USA Network's 2013 Characters Unite Awards. The winners, selected for their efforts in combating hate, intolerance and discrimination, receive a $5,000 grant from USA Network and participating local distributors to support their projects or related nonprofit organizations.

Just in time to celebrate National Diabetes Awareness Month, YMCA of the Suncoast is helping our communities cut their risk of developing type 2 diabetes. We’re one of 74 Ys nationwide participating in the YMCA’s Diabetes Prevention Program. This lifestyle modification program helps people reduce their risk for type 2 diabetes by helping them learn strategies for healthier eating, increased physical activity, and other behavioral changes that can prevent or delay the onset of type 2 diabetes.
